Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

It is natural for anyone to feel apprehensive about dental treatment. Some people are very anxious about even the mildest dental appointment.

We always try to perform all procedures as gentle as possible but, many times even the “softest touch” is not adequate to allay the fears and anxiety in the minds of our patients.

Worthington Dental Group ‘s dentists offer different forms of sedation for the anxious patient who needs some assistance managing their anxiety when receiving dental treatment. Together the dentist and patient decide which form of sedation is best; oral medication, nitrous oxide air (gas), IV sedation.

Our simplest form of anxiety management is Nitrous Oxide inhalation sedation. This involves breathing an odorless mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen in a proportion that provides a feeling of tranquility. Once the procedure is over, after a few minutes you are free of the sedative effect and can drive yourself home.

A slightly stronger sedation procedure utilizes a pill, which is taken before your appointment to render you awake but sedated. We use sedatives in the family of benzodiazepines (valium is a benzodiazepine). You are more sedated with this medication and need a driver for this appointment.

For a stronger sedation experience we are proud to share that Dr. Reed is licensed to perform IV sedation. This is the strongest form of sedation and also requires a driver for this appointment.

We do everything possible to provide you a safe and comfortable experience while receiving your dental treatment. If you wish we will be happy to discuss all of these options with you in greater detail.
